Well, I found out why the coop hasn't been used in a long time...the foxes and raccoons kept making off with the chickens and the previous owner just gave up on having chickens. So, if I decide to have chickens, I will need to start from scratch and make sure I build a very secure coop to protect the chickens. I definitely do not want to put any of us through the horror and expense of a chicken massacre. I would imagine that having the coop closer to the house and further from the woods might help, and we do have a good dog. I am thinking that next year might be a good time to start a flock...that gives me some time to get settled in to the house, learn a lot and get everything ready. There is a neighbor who sells eggs, so I may have to buddy up to her and pick her brain.
Blessings to you all.
