Hi everyone, I'm still new to the world of chickens. I've only had mine for a month, so I'm sorry if this story is boring for those who are quite experienced, but I thought it was pretty cool...

I have 2 RIRs and 2 black silkies (not 100% healthy when I got them! but they're on the mend). My one RIRs "Pippi" is the youngest, and has been at the bottom of the pecking order.. many tail feathers missing even. She has always been very skid dish and flighty. She was around 6 months old when we got her. Anyways, I go out with a few treats tonight (my girls are spoiled

), and she ran right over to me and stuck her head right in the treat cup! She used to run from me! I knelt down and she was almost trying to get on my knee. She ate right along side my silkie who runs the roost, and she wasn't afraid of anything! Even let me pet her and pick her up to hold her. (I of course took this as a great opportunity for a wellness check..looking at her closely)

It was so cool. What a sweetheart. Should I expect to see the pecking order change as she ages? Also.. She is getting bigger, but her waddles and comb aren't very red.. Do they darken as the chicken gets older?

Thanks all!

Sara

Food is the great 'friend maker' in the chicken world. ;-)
They are getting calmer as they get used to their new home and to you.

Wattles and combs will be paler, drier looking and bit smaller when a bird is not laying, no matter the age.
They can plump up and get a shiny, waxy looking red when laying.
