So my hen a RI has been laying this type of egg since she started laying. She is very healthy and a year old. I was wondering what would cause pattern on the top. Thanks!

They just talked about this in my "chicken 101" class. It is extra calcium deposits and when a hen lays eggs like that, she will always lay eggs like that. Just a little "whoops" going on in her reproductive tract but nothing harmful to either her or the egg. In fact, it's a good way to keep track of how often she's laying!

Very cool looking eggs. Do you know if the calcium deposits cause her to use and need more calcium?

Ooh, thanks for posting this topic! My hens would sometimes do this, and it was worrying because their eggs had these little hard lumps on the ends and we didn't know what they were.
Thanks again!

I get eggs like that all the time. One hen lays them with the bumpy speckles just on one end, and one lays them with the bumpy speckles all over the whole egg. I always think those ones must really hurt to squeeze out!
