Interesting protein source?

Crawfish....the boy went down to the lake and came back with a bucket of crawfish. Asked if the chooks would like them....turns out they did...a lot.

Sound ok to y'all? The lake is in the center of our neighborhood..it's clean enough, probably some run off from traffic and yards, but it's full of fish, birds, frogs and clearly crawfish. I wouldn't eat fish from it I guess, but ok to eat eggs from chickens who do?

I'm not an expert but I would think it is OK. If it is healthy enough for fish to live in it should be ok. I wouldn't eat much of what chickens eat, worms, bugs ect. but there eggs are great.

Yeah...I remember last year reading a post about giving the chickens crawfish... As you said, good protein.

There is not much of anything I put in the chicken yard that they won't eat.

(I'm originally from south Louisiana, and used to spend my afternoons after school catching crawfish in the canal behind my house. Oh, that was the life..... )

It is my understanding that crawfish are one of the indicator species for clean water. If there are healthy populations of crawfish, the water quality must be high. I have not researched this myself, but they are supposed to be rather sensitive to pollution. I might be willing to eat some of those fish...
