Interesting Puzzle

I need help with a bit of a math problem. I know the answer to it, but I cannot figure out how they got the answer or how I can show my work. The problem is below.

If a mother cat has four kittens every six months and two are males and two are females, how many cats will there be in two years? For this exercise, use the following information: all months are 30 days long; pregnancy lasts 60 day; all female cats become pregnant when they turn six months old; all animals live. Please attach work if at all possible. Thanks so much for the help and have fun!

1 Cat has 4 and so on. Stuffed if I know, you can tell I've been out of school for a long time.

This isn't homework! It is for 4-H. The answer is 228. Now how do you get that? Everytime I do it I get more than that. Thanks to the people who have tried to help so far!
