Interesting rooster behavior.

I have had chickens for over 40 years and have never had a rooster say "good night" before. Every night when I shut them up for the night I make sure they're all in the little chickens house. After I close up the house and then the pen my brown leghorn rooster crows loudly one time. He and his 5 hens free range all day and I swear it is like he is saying, Good night to me. Sometime it is very dark and other times it is moonlight, but it is always one crow.

Roosters will crow in the dark if there's any disturbances. I'm guessing he considers you a disturbance.

I like it! I’d love a rooster some day. But not yet.

My roosters may be weird. This time of year crowing largely stops at dark. Then is resumes in bouts starting a couple hours before dawn which means about 3 AM. Moonlight increases crowing within limits.

If I keep reading BYC, some day I'm going to believe, "Now I've heard everything." And it will probably have to do with roosters.

Had a white bantam silky that had a melodious crow. Almost like a song bird.

I have no idea why he does that but it's things like this that makes chicken TV better than anything on cable or satellite.

I had an bantam OEG rooster named Rocket once who would crow after dark at any disturbance.
I got off work at 11 pm back then and he would crow to me as i was walking to the house each night.
Rocket is also the reason i was allerted to a weasel in the coop one night.
He started crowing like crazy at 1 am and i knew something was happening.
By the time i got there 6 chickens were dead.
Got that weasel the next night in a live trap and dispatched him.
I still think about Rocket and miss him. Some roosters are pretty special.
