Hi all,
I have a 6 year old Australorp. After not laying for 3 days I did a health check and found a hard mass in her abdomen- internal laying. She was otherwise well so I started her on Meloxicam, amoxicillin and metronidazole twice daily to keep her comfortable. Arranged with the vet to have her put down on Tuesday.
She has been eating, dust bathing, scratching around with her flock and a bright red comb. She has lost some feather condition but overall is very active. She is also having multivitamins but no excess calcium as vet said it would interfere with the meds.
Yesterday and today she has laid normally again, one being the biggest egg I’ve seen at a huge 82g and was quite long. The second was 65g and normal shape. Shell was normal, not soft.
Vet said it’s impossible for her to lay normally again but all my other chooks lay dark brown or blue eggs, and for the first one I caught her in the nest box and saw the end of the lay as I was worried she was getting sicker. She had quite the tantrum at me for annoying her.
There is very little fluid build up around the mass likely due to the meds. She walks and roosts normally. Her flock on the day before I found the mass was excluding her a bit and she was spending excess time in the nest box, but once meds started her behaviour and theirs has returned to normal.
I have never experienced this.
Any thoughts?
