Intoduction

Are you saying in September 2021 you went from ZERO to 53 chickens?! OMG. I love it! I live in North Hollywood, CA (not Hollywood, over the hill in a more industrial suburb). We used to have 6 chickens and then we gave them away. Recently I rebuilt a bigger, better coop and got 20 chicks. Looks like about 5 will be roosters. We can only legally have 1 rooster (and that's only if neighbors allow) here in LA county, so we'll see how long they stay with us. 2 Amber star, 1 buttercup, 3 bielefelder, 6 silver barnevelder, 3 isbar, 2 black copper marans, 1 speckled maran of some sort, 2 whiting true green or blue (not sure)
That sounds like quite the collection. You really only need a rooster if you're going to hatch some eggs? Otherwise they either belong in someone else's yard or the freezer, 🤣

I don't know how long you had your birds but they say you should have one rooster for every 6-8 hens. My ratio is pretty good but they still fight amongst each other and I had one come at me! Luckily they are too young to have long spurs. I'm going to downsize from 6 to maybe one of each breed. I'm hoping my new chicks are mostly girls.

Mine only really crows when he feels threatened and only one usually crows. But I don't know if it's like dogs, you have your barky breeds and your quiet breeds.

My aunt lived in Hollywood. All I remember is that you could see the Hollywood sign on the side of the mountain going to her house, you had to move your car every other day to the other side of the road and she had awesome orange trees in her small backyard.

The weather was always great.

Oh yes, just they were straight run and we have to wait and see. It's gonna be hard picking 1 to keep

Another Texan. So glad to meet you. What side of Texas are you on? It's like a country within a country it's so big.
I'm south and a little west of you. I live in the country, but am almost midway between Athens, Palestine, and Corsicana.
I don't think most people can relate to the size of Texas, until they drive across it, or from one end to the other.
