Hello, Josh, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I had the same thoughts about eating my aging hens. The problem with that is you get attached. They are quite endearing. If you are going to eat any of them, don't name them and don't spend lots of time with them.
Yeah this first generation of the flock are probably pretty safe. The hens should have a great many years of laying ahead of them and our roos are Silkie's, so not very meaty and they're pretty docile.

It's the mixed breed bastard children of the silkies and cali whites that are most likely to be cull fodder assuming they even breed. May need to add some dual purpose heritage breeds later on once we get settled into this craziness. Future generations will be less hands on raising and left more to a brooding hen so they should be much less in the direction of pets.
