I've had my backyard chickens for over a year now. Seven laying hens in all. Two Rhode Island White, two Production Red, three Ameraucanas.

Love having these!

Built my own coop.

I found my way here from a link on our local ordinances. I'm going to be poking around looking for some info and ideas. Our ordinances allow for up to 10 within city limits (no roosters), but a neighbor is now complaining about their cackling. And yes, they do squawk at times! Looks like I'm in the clear, but I'm still looking to make sure he doesn't have a case.

I had no idea this forum existed. Glad to find you!

Good luck with your flock and neighbor. I would bet he, his kids, pets etc. make as much noise or worse than your chickens. Maybe you could record some of their daily sounds and play it back for them. Or at least keep it on hand as evidence.

He hasn't complained for the year-plus that I've had the chickens. But now he has put his house on the market.

I'm thinking of giving the chickens away until he moves. (We've been neighbors for 25 years, and he has always been grumpy.) If it helps him move, it helps me in the long run.

Good luck with the neighbor situation.

Thanks for joining us!
