We are new to city living, have lived in country and had animals for years, but are learning it is a different ball game to have chickies in our smallish (in comparisson to 10 acres) back yard.

We started with 11 birds, 1 wild duck, 2 hens that we were told were young but just starting to lay, 9 new chicks 2 Rhodies, 7 Buffs.

After the full grown duck snuck out from being locked up, lost her to a coon. One of the Buff hens just up and died, think the lady sold them to us exaggerated their age ... we got two eggs 4 months ago and no more! Those were Done hens! Old, old, old! Then lost two Buffs in quick succession to possums (caught in live trap) in middle of the day! We took appropo measures and have done well maintaining the last 6, till yesterday. One of the 5 month old Buff hens did not rise with others stampeeding to the food. She kind of staggered out and tottered to me, allowed me to pick her up took her to the scratch, acted like she was pecking but never touched the grain. She died by noon, no reason.
Unless she was some how poisoned. My hub dug up a huge four o’ clock tuber ‘bout 8” across. It was brittle and did not dispose of every shard that was dropped. The birdies all showed interest in the activity and I became concerned it might be poisonous. That’s how I came to this site! Hope to learn much from ya’ll.

Hi, I'm sorry for your losses, that's never easy. Your experience kind of reminded me of my 1st foray into raising chicks...I lost 4 out of 7 within 2 weeks due to illness (they came from very poor conditions and I got them because I felt sorry for them).

Keep with it, read the forums, study articles in the Learning Center, ask questions...you'll figure out how to keep your future birds safer/healthier and get more enjoyment out of raising them.

Best of luck to you!
