I was asked to inroduce myself upon logging in, so here goes.

I am living on a 50 acre piece of property in upper michigan. I live with my 3 siblings, my mom and my dad, 2 dogs, 2 rats, 1 cat, and 2 aquariums full of fish.

I first got interested in raising chickens and other fowl last summer. I asked my mom if I could get some ducks or chickens but she said no. But I, being the rebellious child i am, was not to be deterred. My mom shortly after, purchased 2 dozen chicken eggs from my grandparents' neighbor, who, I observed also owned roosters. I had already gotten a mini incubator to use origionally for fallen dove eggs wich had never been put to use. So, late that night, I took 4 of the eggs from the carton and placed them in my incubator along with a bit of water. I monitored them for the next 9 days without telling my mom about them. On day 9, I noticed the embryos were rather lively and decided to appeal to her mother-seeing-a-baby-move-for-the-first-time-on-ulturasound/candling senses. I took a video of the chick moving and presented it to my mother. She was a tad displeased that i went behind her back, but allowed me to continue incubating the eggs. 3 out of the 4 hatched and grew rapidly. Unfortunately at 4 weeks old, the chicks were eaten by a coyote while my dog sat and watched calmly from the porch.

So that ended my bird keeping until my mom saw a persuasive essay on ducks that I wrote before hatching the chickens. She was persuaded. So she went out and bought 2 dozen duck eggs, 6 of wich are sitting in the same incubator right now. They are cayuga and runner ducks. One of the runner eggs is double yolked, so we will see how that one turns out.

Aside from that, my other hobbies are drawing, running, playing with my pets, and fishkeeping. I plan to take an apprenticeship and become a tattoo artist after I graduate high school.

So there you have it, that's me in a nutshell. Wish me luck with my duckies and I will wish you safety from the pandemic!

Hi Amie! Welcome to BYC! :frow
It's nice to meet you!
I'm sorry about your first chicks. That must have been rough. :hugs
I hope it's better this time. Make sure the duck pen is coyote proof.
Good luck with your hatch! Let us know how everything goes. :)

Yes, I am planning on locking the birds up at night and having a secure pen for the day while they are young. We also got a great pyr puppy in november to chase off predators like wolves, coyotes, cougars, and foxes. So she should help a bit as well! Also, have no fear, i will have plenty of updates once they hatch!

PYR can make excellent LGD but, they are not all born to the job. Some need careful training before allowing them with livestock, etc. Others like to roam and if not fenced will end up protecting someone else's flock. Also they work better in pairs if you expect them to fend/fight off larger more dangerous predators like cougars.
