Hi, I am very new to chickens but started reading your forums about 9 months ago while I was considering getting chickens and have been ever so grateful for the advice! I stopped to ask someone nearby what breed(s) of chickens he had and wound up agreeing to buy his coop and 10 chickens since he was moving out of the area. Unfortunately, he collapsed the coop with chickens in it the day I was going to pick it up, so I got 5 chickens and no coop and then the guy disposed of the wood instead of letting me try to rebuild it, so sadly, within 2 weeks only had 1 hen left, I guess due to area predators. She (now named Brownie) then went broody on me (thanks again to your forums, we survived that) and I got some fertilized eggs from someone for her to hatch, so I also now have 3 2-month old Dominiques and a yellow chicken - not sure yet what it will be and not sure if i have hens or roosters either. Brownie looks like she may be a Rhode Island red or something similar. After the debacle of my coop 'purchase', I had ordered a kit 'coop' online and it is so small I call it a 'doll-house for chickens', yet Brownie uses the nesting box to lay me an egg each morning and she does go inside to sleep at night. I have the youngsters in another small wire tractor with a small house upstairs. I have collected wood and wire and cleared an area, and plan to build a real coop and run if I can get some help to do it (some of the wood is fairly heavy for an old lady like me to move by herself)!!
