My husband has always raised chickens, but I am fairly new. We have a large hen house with nest boxes that can be accessed from outside. We use pine shavings on the floor and have the roost in the middle similar to an upside down "V". One rooster "red" and 17 hens that produce 12-17 brown eggs a day. Red is having some issues on his legs that I have posted pics on a separate thread. Enjoying our birds and any advice is most helpful.
