Intro

Welcome to BYC. I'd be interested in how you went about convincing the city to let you have more hens. We have a 5 hen limit here. I'm not ready to get more right now, but there sure are more breeds I'd like to try.

It was quite simple and difficult all at the same time. I am sure every city is different, but since I am on a local fB chicken group, I knew that there was a form to fill out if you wanted to get more. So we called the city and requested to keep 12 hens-we were able to state any number that we wanted to, and since my husband made the phone call he just pulled a number out of the air. I was a bit frustrated that he didn’t pick a bigger number, ha ha!! The city sent us a packet of information and said we were required to get the signatures of all of our neighbors whose property lines were within 100 feet of our property lines. The packet had a map and names of everyone we needed to talk to, which was 13 residences! It shocked me that there were that many that we needed to get, but we live on a half acre lot in an old neighborhood where most of the lots are quite small. So 100 feet from our property line is quite a distance. Then we just had to take the time to reach all the neighbors while they were home and ask them to sign our form stating that they are OK with us having more hens. Everyone was so excited and said how much they love watching our hens. We only one neighbor who said no and refused to sign at first. After going back and forth several times, they finally signed it. Then we just motorized it and sent in that piece of paper with their signatures on it and we were good to go!
