Hi there - Michele here. You can call me Mac. So grateful that this space exists.
My intro ...
I am completely new to chickens. In another lifetime - 30 years ago - my kid's dad and I had a hobby farm w sheep, horses, a pony and goat and somehow skipped the chicken thing. Seems weird to me now, although we also had a four-room B&B and four kids - so I guess there was a line somewhere.
I bought four one-year-old chickens and a great coop just two weeks ago. One of the chickens was very aggressive - which was funny when I was in her sites - not so much when one of the grandkids was. She lives on a farm w a rooster now.
I now have two lovely Rhode Island Reds and what I think is a timid Leghorn that's apparently just coming out of moulting. I am hoping to add chicks to the project this spring. I am thinking Barred Rocks if I can find them.
I'm loving the chickens in the back garden. I like the morning routine/company and am looking forward to hanging out with them now that the weather is awesome, and killer chicken has moved on.
As per the intro suggestions ... other hobbies include a crazy urban garden, preserving food that I grow, art (contemporary mixed media, silversmith, wool and clay), writing, music, cooking, travel, apparently Boler restoration (well, using it is the hobby the restoration is the necessary evil), and my best self hikes and cycles. Oh - and playing with very small children that kinda look like me and call me nana.
The rest: four grown kids here in Victoria; four grandkids under four; a terrier X for a housemate; graphic designer/communications by trade; pretty damn good cook; want to be a hobby farmer/artist/writer/sailer when I grow up.
Bonus question(s): simple google search for answers to stupid questions got me here. I joined because I have more stupid questions and everyone seems so generous, knowledgable and patient. Looking forward to getting to know people here.
