Intro

Welcome to BYC!
When you say you don't plan on feeding them any grain are you meaning you won't be feeding any scratch grains? You will be providing a crumble or pelleted feed though correct?
I’m reading some literature about how chickens can be raised without grain. I want the process to be as natural as possible because of different familial inflammatory diseases that flare up, not only when grains are eaten, but when grain fed meat is eaten. Are scratch grains or crumbed/pelleted feed a necessary step in the process? I am a total rookie!

For the chickens to be able to eat a grain free diet they would need a large, diverse forage area year round that provided adequate insects and plant matter. That is rare unless in a more tropical environment.

:welcome:frow I agree. I had my first flock over 50 years ago and their diet consisted of primarily grains. Now they get good feed but I also show them at poultry shows. Good luck and have fun...
