Hello Everyone! We built our Chicken Coop/Run last April and picked up our 4 Hens from a friends farm in June (they were hatched on Easter day). Their names are Ms. Peckins (white rock), Old Crow (Jersey Giant), Houdini (barred rock), and the boss Ethyl (Astrolope/Barred Rock). We got our first eggs in late August and they have not stopped - we consistently get 4 a day and occasionally 3.
I covered every wood surface inside and out with a old time finish that I make from Pine Tar/Linseed Oil and Turpentine (the turps is for flash only and goes away) This waterproofs and keeps mites and other bugs away very well. The wood readily accepts the finish as it is from wood!!
We are using heaters in the Run and Coop (coop is insulated with good air flow at top) for winter, they hang like a fluorescent light fixture and are lightless radiant heat (sorry i forget the name). We have a digital remote thermometer/Humidity gauge in coop to keep an eye out.
There door from the run to the large free range area (the whole backyard!) is automatic.
We spoil these ladies with lots of Love and Kale, Cilantro, Wheat Grass, Scrambled Eggs, Fruits, and many other goodies. There feed is Nutriwise feather Fixer pellets and has worked perfectly for both egg shells and molting.
This site has helped so much from food, to poopy butt, Glad to be here as a member finally!!
