Hello from Utah!
I am new to chickens and on the 7th day. We got 3 R.I.R and 3 B.O. chicks last weekend at the local feed store (I.F.A.) . I found BYC when I was researching how to go about starting my flock. Other than this I have 3 Herder mix dogs (all 3 are ½ Heeler and then a mix of Border Collie, Aussie and or Catahoula) I am sure I will be asking questions about how to get the Houla mix not to eat the chickens. So far the Heeler/BC is really great with the babies. I have already been initiated into new chick problems, one of the R.I.R.’s started really failing a few days ago and I truly was surprised to find her alive in the morning and she hung on by a thread through the next day and now she is doing really great other than the fact that she is ½ the size of the largest of the flock and many grams smaller than all the others. I am on the 2nd day of treating the entire flock with Corid just in case that is what it was. I have segregated the sicky chick in the bathroom near us but have brought up a 2nd chick 2 separate times to keep them familiar with her and will maybe try to reintroduce her tomorrow night if she keeps improving as much as she has. I have a great husband that did not really want chickens but humors me in most everything I want so he will be starting on the coop soon. He is a phenomenal construction type guy so this should be a breeze.

and Welcome To BYC! Hope the sick chick pulls through. If you want to do a search, there are a number of threads on teaching dogs to behave around chickens, ie
