As you have a 3 year old boy, I would highly recommend that you not get a rooster for several years. The difference in size between a 3 year old and a 8 year old is quite a bit. Rooster have a tendency to get mean without any provocation. In other words, while it would be easy to make a roo mean, some just get mean. And who they usually get mean with first, is a small child.
Expecting a small child to defend themselves against an aggressive roo is not fair, and can ruin the whole chicken experience for life. A child can be seriously scarred an even lose an eye to an attacking rooster. And many roos go from fine with kids, to attacking in a moment without much warning.
One cannot know if this is going to be a good roo, until they have kept them. Do some research on this board, it is full of stories where the rooster became aggressive.
