I am building a chicken coop. I hope to have the coop finished in a week or so. I have 2 full grown chickens (1 Rhode Island Red and 1 Brown Leghorn) and about 100 chicks that are around 5 to 6 weeks old (multiple breeds including some small Silkies and Bantams). When to coop is complete, I will move the chicks into it. I am wondering about the large chickens. I know it would not be a good idea to just turn them loose together. But, would it be possible to slowly integrate them, but keeping them inside a large dog crate within the coop for a couple of weeks, then let them out? My greatest concern is for the small Silkies and Bantams, who in a couple of weeks will still be much smaller than the full grown chickens. Another option is to re-home the RIR and slowly introduce the Brown Leghorn, she is much more calm and timid than the RIR. Or, is my best bet just to re-home both larger birds?
