It depends entirely on your dogs - are they already obedient? Do they follow your voice commands? We trained ours through obedience lessons with a local trainer, because we knew we had a breed that can be a bit problematic (Basset Hounds) - Flash and Doodle.
But we also have a Border Collie and she doesn't put up with ANYTHING messing with her "herd" of chickens and ducks - she also is an obedience school graduate. Gracie, our BC, is also a flock guardian, as you can tell.
So we introduced the dogs to the ducklings in the brooder. Went over commands - Leave It, Sit, etc. until the Bassets were so bored of the ducklings, they didn't care when they grew and ran around the yard.
With the chickens, we got four older hens (Rhodies and Ameraucanas) to start with. Went over the commands, Bassets on the leash. Chickens ignored them, they ignored the hens. Good deal. At one point, one of the Bassets (the dumb one) went over and try to jostle a hen for feed, she pecked him in the forehead so fast it was like a stealth ninja attack - now he ignores them entirely.
Flash, the other Basset, is our hatchery chick nanny - he watches the chicks, grooms them and still grooms our rooster. That rooster, I may add, is now nearly 2 feet tall - a Cochin rooster. We still give Flash all our hatchery chicks to nanny.
Gracie herds the ducks and chickens. The chickens and ducks all free range unsupervised with our three dogs and three cats. For awhile, we even had a Flock Guardian pig but hubby couldn't get used to him so now its just back to the dogs.
