My small semi-urban homestead (only 2 acres) is on the outskirts of Kingman, Arizona. My wife and I have been slowly building raised beds for gardening and planting a variety of fruit trees. We bought some laying hens from a local homesteader a few years ago and they were doing great until a recent storm dropped a large tree branch onto our small coop and killed them. 
The only upside was a few chicken dinners but we really miss our girls.
We haven't raised chicks in years but today we got 6 Delaware pullets--well, they are all supposed to be pullets anyhow--we'll see. I haven't had Delawares before but they are supposed to do well in our fierce summer heat, be very calm and friendly birds, and very good layers of large brown eggs.
