I use wood shaving in my coop. The problem is its rainy muddy out side of coop so when I step into the coop it gets the shaving wet and now today when I went out there it stunk do bad of ammonia. The shaving feel damp probable cause I'm walking on them. Any ideas would be so apreciated. I'm a new Chicken owner. Help
Having a well ventilated coop should help but I keep a shovel for cleaning right outside the coop. I use it to remove any clumps of snow I might track in and/or saturated litter.
Consider changing your set up if you can. Chickens empty their crops and digest while they sleep so the one spot they poop the most is under the roosts. Catch boards/trays placed under roosts are a tremendous help in reducing the frequency of changing out all the bedding and make it a much faster and simple chore. They also reduce the amount of litter being used, saving on the litter expense as well. Without them, the droppings go right to the floor and get spread around as the birds scratch around. If you can place boards/trays under your roosts then you won't have to worry so much about getting in there to clean during inclement weather thus saving the coop from wet/muddy boots.
I have just a wide board that slides under two roosts and the nesting boxes are under the board. I covered the board with vinyl self-adhesive floor tiles to keep moisture from seeping into it. Then I top it with pine litter so I can use it in the compost. When it's time to clean, I use a flat shovel and a short handled garden hoe to scrape off the board onto the shovel then walk it right to the compost. I've also seen people use sand and a cat litter scoop or boot trays, shallow storage bins, etc. either with or without any litter but the whole tray can be removed for easy cleaning. There are tons of great tray/board set ups people have shared here.
How is your flock doing? Has your hen settled down a bit with the new pullets?
