I've lurked here for a while and really appreciate the site and the input of all the members.

Growing up on a farm, we raised chickens for meat and eggs. Like others, we sold our surplus eggs. Later on as an adult, I kept a few hens for the eggs and they were my children's pets.

Now, after many of life's little surprises, I have moved across the country and live within city limits in GA. Luckily our city allows us to keep a few hens. My BF converted an old shed into a coop and I bought some production chicks back in February of this year. We are allowed 6 hens, but I bought 8 chicks thinking there might be one or two not survive. One died within two hours of getting them home, and the farm store replaced it.

All eight have survived and flourished. They are 5 months old and I can't wait for them to start laying. I have four Buff Orpingtons and four Australorps, both I've had in the past.

In mid-May, I decided I wanted some Lavender Orpingtons. I've never had Lavenders and I think they're beautiful. So I ordered four of those, hoping to be able to keep two. One of them started to look more like a blue as she grew, and I was very happy with that, but a weasel got her the night before last. :( So now I have 11 hens, all happy and healthy. I'm going to trap the weasel as the hens now refuse to go back into the coop at night. I can shut them in, but I want to trap the weasel first. In the meantime, they are roosting in a tree outside my bedroom window.

These are my almost-2-month-old pullets:
