(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are very new to chickens - we got our first batch on April 6, and our second batch on June 8. I never had chickens as a kid, so having birds has been very interesting!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 3 teenage chickens and 3 baby chicks.

(3) What breeds do you have?
We thought we would be clever and get one each a different breed to see what we would like to have down the road. However it has presented its own set of small problems (sexing them is harder because there is nothing to compare to, they are hardy to different heat/cold temps, etc). But they all have unique personalities! We have of our older chickens: Buff Orpington (Gertie), Easter Egger (Esther), Speckled Sussex (Harry) and our new bunch: Color Pack (Olive), Cuckoo Maran (Vera), and Sapphire Blue Plymouth Rock (Cora). We really wanted Wyondottes but the feed store was always out. But there's always next year!

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I really like observing them and watching them go about their chicken day. We call them our little velociraptors. I also really like watching them grow up and loose their chicken fluff and see what they become.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Horseback riding is my main expensive/time consuming hobby, followed by hiking, photography, gardening, baking. And of course traveling/day dreaming about traveling.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We are two people, one horse, one cat, and 6 chickens (for now..) on 3 acres. My partner is a welder/fabricator/builder of things so he makes all of our random farm ideas come to life!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I found BYC by endlessly googling how to sex chicks for our first batch haha! One turned out to be a cockerel ;)
