hi all,
I am living in the california redwoods, and a mother of 40 {er, chickens}. this thing started when my dad ordered 30 peeps from Ideal poultry a couple years ago. we were going thru a cold spell, and unfortunately, half of them didn't make it.
We put the peeps under heat lamps and manged to nurse the remaining 13 or so back to health. I fell in love with the little guys and they became mine to raise. They all grew to adults, but today I have only three left of that brood; I lost the rest to predators and sicknesses.
I looked forward to next year, when I would order more chicks, this time when the weather warmed up. i scanned Ideal poultry and ordered thirty more peeps of different breeds. this time when they came, all survived! I raised this brood successfully as well, along with another smaller one in autumn, and now I've got my flock!
Almost all are different breeds, and are all free range. I've got barred rocks, a buff orp, ameraucanas, a black sumatra, leghorns, a ton of varieties of old English game, red-shouldered yokohamas, lakenvelder, sicillian buttercup, sebrights, minorcas, a cute little Japanese banty, brahma banty, a few hybrid layers, a silkie, austalorps, and four OEG and dutch banty roos. And all have names. They're super tame: always want to sit on my lap, and all love to be kissed and cuddled.
Thats me- I'm just madly in love with my little girlies.
