Introducing myself

Glad to meet you, Amanda, and welcome to BYC. You husband can now meet dozens of people who talk all day to our chickens!

I know what you are talking about that chickens can give you a reason to get moving on tough days. If I didn't have my birds and dogs to care for, I probably would not get out of bed some days. And BYC is a great community - a nice way to chat with folks from a comfy chair or sofa.

I have had chickens off and on for 14 years. I love my chickens. I talk to them and they squawk back. As soon as they hear my voice they start squawking. My husband teases me and calls me a crazy chicken lady. He says, " I don't know anyone who has full conversation with their chickens." I have last many chickens to predators. Now my dogs kills anything that goes near their pen. I did have five chicks that disappeared and no sign of a struggle. I got sick about six years ago so I had to find my farm animals a home. We had 14 pigs, some heifers, a goat, 40 chickens, rabbits and had to find them homes because I couldn't take care of myself let alone animals. My boys were younger so they could not help that much. The last couple of years I still have my illness but am able to handle it better. I decided to get chickens again. Even though it was hard at first to take care of chickens, it gave me a purpose again. I have gradually gotten some better and I think my chickens helped with that. Even when I feel bad when I go out and take care of my chickens I start to feel better. My boys (3 teenagers) have to take care of them on my really bad days but other than that I do. Animals can be great therapy.
Hi, and welcome! It is good to hear that you are managing your illness better and able to take care of chickens again. They are a constant source of joy. :)

I have read previously that people who have pets to care for live longer and happier lives. Our pets give USA purpose to get out of bed.

P.S. Welcome! :ya
