We are a first time chicken family. We got our first flock of 21 chicks on my birthday last June and are having a great time with them. It has been an interesting first year raising chicks, watching them grow and change and watching our kids REALLY get into the routine. I love seeing the kids take such an interest in "chores". All summer long we watched the "bird show" just to observe their behavior and get to know each individual. Our first egg was a phone call to all of the grandparents and friends... we were so excited! Our first loss to a hawk was disheartening. Processing was weird, but we made it through (sans children). We even had a sick rooster (Thor the Silver-Headed Viking) who made an amazing recovery, and we're still not sure what he had or what we did right. He even made it onto our Christmas card! These past few months have been such a learning and growing experience for all of us. We have horses, a dog, cats, chickens, ducks (a whole different bird!), fish, and a love for the great outdoors. We live in Maryland (no more snow, please!) and love to garden and generally get our fingernails dirty. Thank you for welcoming us to BYC!

I got the chickens first (4 years ago) and just brought my first two ducks home. They are in the livingroom with me watching TV in a clear tote. They will go outside witht the hens tomorrow. After four years we still enjoy the girls and we also process 150-200 meat birds in the summer. You get better every time and there is nothing better.
