Introducing New Chicken Buddy

I had two Rhode Island reds and two barred rocks (all hens, now about 8 months old). From the beginning the two barred rock paired off as did the two reds. I have not had chickens enough to know if this breed pairing is usual or not. Unfortunately, we lost one of the barred rocks when trying to lay an egg. The remaining barred rock looks for her friend, but seems OK. I feel bad she does not have a roosting friend (they would always do things together) and have been thinking about getting another barred rock.

My questions are, do chickens seem to recognize their own variety? If I get another barred rock, will chances be that she pairs off with my current bar? What age is best to get to try this introduction?

I have read on this forum to keep the new chicken visible but protected for a couple of weeks during the daytime. Maybe if I try this and then introduce the barred rock first to her this will help her have a friend? Am I just over-thinking this whole deal?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, chickens recognize each other if they are of the same breed. 12 weeks and up is the best age range to do introducing. And yes, one of the best methods for introducing is the "see but don't touch." I'll be doing that too soon!
