I recently got seven pullets, built a lovely coop and run and established them in their new home. Then I decide to get two more chicks - a Polish and a Welsummer. The Polish chick died in the night and now the Welsummer is all alone in the brooder. My question is: Should I go get another Welsummer and raise the two until they are eight weeks and then introduce them to my original flock? 5 weeks seems too long to leave the one chick alone.

Thanks for the advice!

I am not expert but from what i read getting another chick to go in the brooder with it would likely be safer than putting it out with the older birds. you might also try putting a mirror in with the lone chick till you decide what to do as it will make it feel less lonely. best wishes, lisa

Thanks! I think I am going to go get another chick tomorrow. I worry about the Welsummer being unsocialized and then thrown in with a flock. Seems a recipe for problems.

Thanks!
