Introducing ourselves

Thanks for sharing pictures of your set up with us. I can't tell by looking at the photo, but is the run fortified with hardware cloth?

If your coop and run are fortified like Fort Knox, you could leave the coop doors open and let the flock go in and out as they wish.
It will be shortly. This coop has mushroomed in size (yes I fell for the chicken math). :). I finally have it ready to attach the hardware cloth that has been sitting in my garage for over three months. I took all my measurements yesterday and will cut this afternoon and start attaching. I've had a massive pushback from nearly everyone near by saying I'm going overboard with my fortifications but I just refused to backdown. I had my plan and I'm going to complete it. I agree, once I get that in place, I will just let it be and if they don't go in, then at least I know the run is as secure as it can possibly be.

You aren't going overboard with the hardware cloth. Everything likes chicken for dinner so whatever steps you can take to protect the flock, the better chance they have.
