Hello guys! Our family (5 kids/ 16 yrs to 3 mos.old) has been wanting chickens for a very long time. We are finally readying to take the plunge and have learned mounds-thank you! We live in Texas in a neighborhood and have about a 22X22 ft space for our peeps-which we have yet to buy. My interest is the eggs and fun and responsibility for our homeschooled kids. We are also interested in an organic ONLY system. We would welcome any advice you may have on best breeds for laying most egg output, how many for our size area, and cool inexpensive ideas for coop building. ... thanks yall!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Standard sized hens require 4 square feet inside the coop and 10 square feet of run per bird, so plan for that when building. You may enjoy the Henderson Chicken chart, found easily by googling, it has many breeds evaluated for things like egg laying and cold/heat tolerance.
