Here is what we created for introducing our chicks to the flock. We have one rooster and five hens. The chicks are about two - three months old now and are getting too big for the brooding box in the coop. I call this a "Mini Coop" - basically, we built a 6 x 3 foot frame with an open bottom and a small opening on top to add food or Chickens through the trap door. It was very entertaining for my husband and I to create this with no plans- just a general idea! Today was the first day and all the chickens are happy!
The "mini coop" is inside the covered chicken run (a whole other project) and after doing a little research about adding new members to the flock, we decided that this is a great way to add the chicks every year. The older hens and "Pepper" the rooster are checking out the new additions through the mesh/plastic chicken wire. Every day we will move the chicks back and forth until it is time to have the face to face or beak to beak meetings in a few days or weeks.
