Howdy!
I am new to the forums and this is my first stroll through the Predators and pests section so i thought i would post up my little solution for night time vermin even though i am still working on setting up my first Flock.
I live in a small town of about 200 people and i am the last home at the end of town so any vermin seem to make their way through my yard. I have a couple of Akitas that run the big yard 100x200 (have showed them for over 20 years now) and since i have lived here in town they have racked up a dozen or so coons, 6 skunks, a bunch of Ferrel cats a couple possums, countless bunnies and countless black birds. (One of my Akitas leaves food in her bucket and lays under it acting like she is sleeping and watches for the black birds to swoop down and steal the food then she jumps up and stuffs her head in the bucket and catches them) Mind you these were all inside of my chainlink fenced yard they wandered/squeezed into. Frankly i dont mind the cats coons and possums but those skunks well all 6 of them were within yards of the house and each time the wind blew the stench into the house. Twice so bad we literally had to head for a hotel! I decided enough of that and now if the dogs start making a ruckus at night i check out the yard with the "skunkinater" and so far have been able to dispatch the skunks before the Akitas do. Its a Ruger 10/22. That little scope on top of it is a 3rd Generation night scope. It shoots less than an inch at 50 yards in the dark
I use subsonic shells in it so its about as noisy as a pellet rifle. Its as effective as shooting in daylight but with a green cast to it. No flashlight needed so it doesnt scare the pests off. They have no idea i am coming for them!
Oh yeah, did i mention i shoot competitively as well? Got hooked shooting indoor competitions during the long winters when i lived in Alaska.
