Hi there--We live in Alamo, CA and got our first chicks last weekend. We have a buff orpington, a rhode island red, a black orloff and a Ameraucana--they are so cute!

So far so good in the brooder--just figured out this morning as they were kicking the shavings into their water that it was time to raise the water dishes.

I read we are supposed to play with our chicks--and I don't really know how. when I put my hand into the brooder they run, and I don't want to harass them. I tried giving them one small spinach leaf last night and they went for it--but is it ik to give them anything other than their chick feed right now.

Any other advice is sincerely appreciated!

Welcome to BYC. I dont recommend you give them anything other than chick starter and fresh water. Wait til the chicks are about 2 weeks old, then sprinkle parakeet grit or sand in the bedding. They'll pick and peck at it. They'll need that to grind feed in their gizzard. It's up to you whether or not you want to handle them.
