Hi all, my name is Ron. I am located in MT. Pleasant NC and new to BYC and very appreciative for this sites community and information.

Me and the wife recently got six BOs and one of them now has a swollen eye. We are not sure if this is a pecking order fight related or something like Mycoplasma. Since I am new to this and it is an infection is the rest of the flock at risk?

Anyway here is some timeline information
- We picked them up last week and not notice any issues the first day
- day 2 we noticed a slight swollen eye. Possible it was there already when we got them can't be sure.
- day 3 - current eye has gotten worse. This makes me think if it was an infection from a virus it just happened after we got here.

I also suspect it could be them establishing their new order and she got into a fight as she is missing a piece of her comb.

I hate that my first post is an injury question but looking for some advice.

I have attached 2 pics of the hen (Bessy) as well as their setup in my backyard.

Thanks
Ron

With the sinus swelling on her face and the bubbles in her eye, that can be a sign of mycoplasma gallisepticum or MG. That is a chronic respiratory disease that may also cause other respiratory symptoms or not. Tylan 50 injectable given orally, or Tylosin powder in the water, can treat symptoms. She will remain a carrier and can also pass it in her hatching eggs. I would check local feed stores for the Tylan 50, and if they don’t have it you can order it or the Tylosin online. Here is a link for Tylosin that I have used:

Are these your only chickens? She could have been exposed at her previous home, and MG has an incubation period of about 4-10 days.

Thank you. I will order some. They are our only ones and they were together with the previous owner. So if it is MG they would already be carriers. We were going to add a few more but will hold off for now.
