I've been lurking for forever just reading and reading and posted a question or two. I really like this site and have learned so much. I've got 5 white Silkies coming and 10 buff Orptingtons as well from Cackle Hatchery. I had ducks two years ago and rehomed them all on Craigslist after determining I just did not have room for them. My husband and I decided we wanted fresh organic eggs again so here we go!
My husband is hatching and raising quail and guineas this year. We got about a 40% hatch rate and had to help the last four to hatch, 10 lived out of 24 eggs but I'm not counting the egg he dropped. I think I did not get the incubators humidity up high enough. The ones we helped are fine now but I am hoping to have a better hatch this next go round as we just started 40 more guinea eggs to keep at our place in the hills. It is covered with ticks and needs tick eating birds badly. I have a lot of fences to build before these babies are old enough to let on the ground.
We drove to Ravenden and bought 5 chicks from a lovely lady who told me their mothers were Buff Orpingtons and the daddies were from a Copper Maran rooster. Should be interesting. Hope at least two are hens. They are very sweet.
So when all my chickies are old enough they will go out into the duck house which dh cleaned out last summer for his lawn mowers and it will all start again. I really want a chicken tractor but I think one for 20 chickens would be awfully large.
