Hello everyone.

I am a 19 year old (today was my Birthday 4-25-1996) who is interested in learning about chickens and how to make a profitable business out of it as a side job. I currently work with my Dad for someone at a Lube & Tune shop, and I make $400 a week. I prefer to make atleast $1000 a week. Let's begin with a summary of my background.

I am a Indian who was born in Fiji Islands, my parents were too and so were theirs as well. My Mom and I, moved to the U.S.A back in May 2005 when I was 9 years old, so we can live with my Dad. He had originally came to the U.S.A in 2000 to attend his brother's funeral, but could not return do to some sort of civil war going on.

Anyways, I struggled a lot living in America. I was always an outcast in school and was target of a racial hate and compared to terrorists that I didn't even know about myself at the time. That resulted in me not wanting to go to school. I missed a lot of school. During my teen years I'd probably went to school 2-4 months each school year spread out.

I am currently a High School dropout. I still have 90 High School Credits to achieve and to pass my Math CAHSEE. I'm working on trying to see if my school district will let me work on those 90 credits along with additional credits, to waver my Math CAHSEE. I did get close to passing it last time when I took it, but it was a fluke since I guessed most of the time. I tried the GED practice tests online, but I did not have any success to get the passing grade. I even struggled with Social Studies, which was my favorite in High School.

With us being Indians, we eat a lot of chicken. My Dad sometimes buys chickens from his friends, and we butcher it within a few days. We live in a trailer park, so we cannot keep it with us for a long period of time.

My Dad is interested in raising chickens, ducks, goats etc. I am here to gain knowledge from this forum and its seasoned members. If we are gonna raise chickens someday, might as well make a profitable business out of it, rather then just selling it to family and neighbors only. I myself am interested in (when it comes to chickens) in gamefawls, particularly the Allen Roundheads.

I will stop now, before my thread sounds more annoying then it is already. I had a short simple post (which summarized everything said,) but the dang page refreshed on me, there for this is sounding more like me rambling on and on.

I will update this thread with my questions on a future date, and hopefully some seasoned members can link me to a similar thread. Before I joined, I noticed that there were thousands of threads. Please note, that I am not familiar with forums (particularly this one) so I apologize in advance if my questions may sound familair.

Nice to meet you Mr.Fiji, I'm sorry you had such a hard time in the school system. My family were victims of religious persecution , being a minority in any regard, is subject to bullying and hatred. I don't think that will ever change. I was born here and so were my parents. We moved out of there 45 years ago, and have learned to just be private and not share much with neighbors. People generally move out here because they want privacy - so in a way that is good.

I hope you will be able to realize your dreams of finishing your education. Honestly there are good people in this country, who aren't prejudiced - and sooner or later you will find them.

Hope you and your family will do well In the chicken business. Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock.

glad you have joined us.

I know of only one individual who had plans to start his own commercial range chicken business for egg production. But when he researched the cost of land, building, equipment, feed and expected return on the investment was overwhelmed and turned to other endeavors.

But if this is your dream, you need to investigate it for yourself. CA has recently passed laws expanding the required space and housing which has the larger egg/chicken businesses lowered profits. And many other states are adopting those same regulations.

I would suggest you investigate exactly what is required, and run the numbers of what you think you could accomplish. Your local Agriculture Extension Agent may be the place to start.

Good luck with your future endeavors.

Thank you for the post. Yes I will have to look more into the cost of land, permit, building etc. I currently have a simple idea for meat production. I am currently trying to write down what I have planned regarding the cost and expenses. I will make a thread in the coming weeks, and will look forward to everyones input on if it's possible legally. When I say legally, I mean the environment, since I have a planned starting budget of $100.000.

Thank you for the links. It's helped refresh my memories about chickens and much more. I have more questions on a business perspective, which I plan on discussing thoroughly, whenever I get a chance.
