Hi everyone!
I’m Sam, and I’m new to chickens, though not entirely new to having them in our household. My husband grew up with chickens and raised them his entire life, up until about ten years ago when we got married. So while this will be a brand-new experience for me, it’s not completely foreign territory for our family.
We don’t have chickens just yet—I’m currently finishing up our coop and making sure everything is safe and ready. Once that’s done, we’ll be gifted six already-laying hens from one of my husband’s coworkers who is thinning her flock. I’m not sure what breeds we’ll be getting, but I’m really hoping for a variety, and possibly adding more later so we can have different egg colors.
What excites me most about raising chickens is the self-sustainability and food freedom that comes with it. We have a small micro-homestead, and I’m hoping to eventually set up a little farmstead stand where I can sell eggs and other items. I love to cook and bake, and I’m currently deep into my sourdough journey and having a lot of fun learning and improving—fresh eggs definitely feel like they’ll fit right into that lifestyle.
Outside of chickens, I’m plant-obsessed, I love gardening, reading, animals, nature, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. I also enjoy remodeling and decorating our home (we just boutgh an 118yr farm house!!). I’m a stay-at-home mom to five kids, and we have two dogs, three cats, and a goldfish rounding out our household. My husband and I have been married since 2015.
I found Backyard Chickens through Facebook and Google while researching, and I’m excited to learn from everyone here and be part of such a knowledgeable and supportive community!
