(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We have ducks! We bought four Pekins from Tractor Supply. Unfortunately, three were eaten by raccoons while in their temporary shelter. We are currently building a large enforced, colorful duck mansion.
With Covid and toddlers it's been really hard to get it done. It's 80% there! We purchased 7 more baby Rouens and they stay in our three-seasons-room at night. I can't wait for them to move out.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We have 8 ducks.
(3) What breeds do you have? 1 Pekin and 7 Rouens. The Pekin laid her FIRST egg today and I am panicking, this is why I joined today.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I love having something for my toddlers to help with and lean about. I also love having a new commodity (eggs) and learning a new skill. I have yet to bond with my ducks, but we do feed them kale and tomatoes from our garden almost daily. They love it!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I love cycling around my neighborhood (goal is 20 miles, only at 17), I do lots of art (watercolor, acrylic), I'm in graduate school and I chase after my three little kiddos.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a five-year-old (almost six), newly four-year-old, and a newly two-year-old. They LOVE the ducks, outdoors, learning new things, movies, baking, and having silly fun. I am in graduate school to become a certified clinical therapist and am attempting to figure out how much is too much, and how far I can keep pushing with new hobbies and skill building. We also have a boxer/collie mix, an old tuxedo outdoor cat, and a tank of new fish.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
A quick google'd duck question pops up this website.
