Hi! I am Laura from WildflowerLane!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We have had hens for about 3 years, good success with integrating new flock and rooster fall 2024 to our two older hens, which have since died of old age.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
10 layers and one rooster, <10 expected hatchlings in 2 days!
(3) What breeds do you have? An Americana mix (I forget the cross!)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We love having and sharing fresh brown eggs, and getting to know the personalities within the flock. It has challenged us to solve problems as they come up, and it is so satisfying knowing they are healthy and producing!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I quilt, knit and spin fiber into yarn (albeit, thick and bumpy for now). I also made a lot of grapevine wreaths, both twisting them and decorating them. I love spending time with my grandkids at museum, reading and hiking!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I just retired! The grandkids are mostly nearby, and we have a terrific Black Lab named Dex. We are working hard relaxing and fixing up our modest country home.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Gosh, you have the best articles! I found them by Googling specific questions.
