We are fairly new to chickens. We currently live in Northern California on 28 acres and have 5 horses, horseback riding lesson / boarding business and 3 German Shepherds (who are chicken friendly..but never left unsupervised near chickens because they are......German Shepherds). We currently have 13 chickens; 5 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Barred Rocks, 2 Black Australops, 1 Black Jersey Giant, 1 Welsummer and 1 Welsummer/Wyandette cross. They are in a large fenced area with their coop, grass and sunflower beds. They range in age from 3 years to 16 weeks. My husband is currently building me a very large coop on wheels that we can move around our pastures with 12 nesting boxes, large perching areas, solar lights, and solar dusk/dawn automatic door. We will use portable electric fencing to keep them and their eggs safe from predators and they have overhead protection in the event of chicken hawks. I am looking to add about 12-15 more chickens for the pasture coop area which will be roughly 1700 SF. I am having such a great time with our chickens and my cousin nailed it. Chickens are like potato chips...you can't have just one :) Looking forward to all of the sharing of information.
