Hey BYC peeps, thanks for the comments and welcomes, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas.
I just wanted to share an update and get a little guidance. Just a quick review of my situation, I can’t seem to locate the thread I started. Anyway I have 4 beautiful RR, had 7, 3 died over the summer. I really missed having more so a friend of a friend had a couple to rehome. Another RR and EE. They were quarantined for 3 weeks and then brought to a fenced off section of a ‘greenhouse run’ we use in the winter, which you can see above. It is attached to the coop with a little access door. Well, we waited and watched. I know now it was too early, but after 2 days I let them out. Well as you can imagine all hell broke loose. The EE was acting like the Tasmanian devil from bugs bunny. Completely beating up my birds. So back behind the fence they went. 3 days later we had a warm spell with rain and all the snow melted so I opened up the doors and let everyone out to range. I thought this would be a good opportunity for everyone to have their space and try to work it out. But no. The EE stalked and chased and fought wth everyone. So that morning I took her back. I didn’t want but... anyway the owner was away but instructed me to put her back in the coop. When I arrived I found something a little bigger than a closet. I thought there must only be a couple of birds in the there but when I opened it...I was stunned. There were about 10. All different kinds and they appeared to be insane. The fighting and crowing was non stop. I thought how am I going to put this poor bird back into that! I called the owner and he said just let them out my neighbor will close the door tonight, they all know to go in at night. So I let her go and she of course was targeted. My only consolation was knowing 1- how tough she was and 2- she was used to this environment, although I’m sure she didn’t like it. So sad...
So meanwhile, back home I have the other RR still behind the fence. She is showing signs of aggression now that the EE is gone and now that I know where she came from, I know why. My question is “can a chicken learn knew behaviour” or will she always be aggressive? She is also showing signs of increased stress, she’s pulling her feathers out. She’s finding it hard to be separated from the girls, especially at night when they go in the coop. She almost can’t take it, she gets so upset, constant pacing. How long should I separate her? Here’s a picture of the set up, you can see the fence barely but it’s there. The greenhouse is about 12x 15
Thank you!
