Though I am a new member, I have used this site since March of '17 to learn about all things chicken. At first I was trying to determine whether or not back yard chickens were for me.
May of '17 I started my backyard flock and have never looked back! I have 3 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Red Rock, and an EasterEgger. I also started with 2 bantams, both of which I've lost to unforeseen circumstance (being the newbie that I am). I started chicks, all of which turned out to be hens.
I am almost 3 years out from removal of a benign brain tumor which has left some neurologic, motor disadvantage. But my girls don't know that! I call them my Therapy Chicks! Working to make their coop safe and keeping it clean, providing them nutritious food, water and snacks, and making plans an interesting chicken yard for them, has been great fun and challenging for me in the very best way. The girls started laying eggs in early December and I have given eggs to friends and neighbors, even workmen who have come to the house for repairs or services! The delight in their eyes to receive fresh eggs is only the icing on the cake to the personal delight I have taken in being the friend caregiver of my beautiful feathered friends. I'm looking forward to my new friends who also enjoy their chickens.
