I love my backyard flock amongst many other pets we have which include a dog, many cats, bird and a turtle. We are a regular suburban farm. I hope to learn lots of things to help my flock stay happy and healthy. I also would like to post eventually about my experience with getting my roos neutered. There are so many questions about this but not much is said about after the fact. I look forward to being a part of this group.

Hi, and thank you. My daughters kindergarten class last year hatched chicks and ducks. Only one duck hatched and no one wanted it so we took it along with one chick to keep it company. We had two free roaming hens already so a couple more birds would be great. As time went on our chick turned out to be a rooster and we lost one of our hens to an ovarian tumor. We planned to re-home our rooster and the lady who took the rest of the classroom chicks said she had a hen for us. Well long story short no one would take our first rooster (I didn't want him to be eaten) and the new hen turned out to be a roo. We live in the city so no roosters allowed and the first roo was getting aggressive and biting my kids drawing blood. Given everyone has to share the backyard we just couldn't have the aggression nor the crowing. My vet had only done two prior neuterings on roos and we knew it was risky but giving them a chance at life was worth it. Our vet is an amazing surgeon and did a lot of studying prior to the surgery. Anyway, they are now 4 days post surgery and doing amazingly well. They are out and about being happy roosters and there are no more attacks to our feet and legs. The one rooster still tries to crow a bit but he doesn't put much effort into it so it's quite muffled and soft. I do miss his crow but we love him and having him in a safe and loving home is worth not hearing his crow.
