Hello. I have been raising chickens for the past 10 months.
I have 7 chickens. 5 Leghorns, 1 Rhode Island Red and a black hen of unknown origin. There is also a Silkie hen. My local bylaws state that I am not allowed to have any roosters.
I also have two 10 month old Muscovy females and 1, 8 month old Muscovy drake.
I live in a cold climate and have order 5 unsexed Chantecler day olds for mid May. I have chosen this breed for their hardiness and small comb size. My Leghorns received frost bite this winter on their combs and wattles. I prefer to raise multi purpose breeds (the leghorns were not part of the plan)
The reason that I am raising these birds is for food. For eggs and meat. Meat chicks will be added in the spring and summer. The Muscovy are for their meat.
I love being outside in the nice weather and puttering around taking care of my birds is very relaxing for me. I want to grow my own healthy free range birds so that I know that they have been treated very well have had freedom to forage and exercise and know that they are truly organically raised.
I have several dogs, some of which are bird friendly.
I found BYC by researching about Muscovy ducks and decided that I needed to learn from those who have some experience with raising birds at home. I live in farm country and most farmers here grow commercially
, which does not make for good advice givers.
