(1) Are you new to ducks / when did you first get ducks?

Yes, I am very new to ducks. I purchased ducklings two weeks ago.

(2) How many ducklings do you have right now?

5 beautiful spoiled rotten ducklings.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have 3 Appleyard Ducklings and 2 Black East Indie Ducklings.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard ducks?

I live off of a creek/cove that connects to large river. I love watching the wild Mallards and we have two pait of swans that visit us too. I'm hoping I can train my babies to stay around the yard and come onto the water with us when we take the canoe out.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Quilting, painting, drawing, antique restoration, gardening.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I'm a home school momma as well, (middle school age) we also have a giant Flemish rabbit, her name is Moose.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

Google search. I've been reading all of the forums for the past 2 weeks. For keeping them indoors, behavior and things to look out for. The two Black East Indie ducklings seemed to have a spell, not major seizure, yesterday and they both laid on their bellies and their necks went limp and their back feet stretched all the way out. No major shaking or breathing problems.. I have niacin suppliments, liquid B complex, Pedialyte/electrolyte in their water. It only happened once per each East Indi baby. I've cut up clover for them, gave them rolled oats mashed up in their water too. They have Dumor starter at 18% protein. <3

Your baby ducks are adorable; enjoy it because they grow up so fast!

As you've learned BackYard Chickens is only part of what this group is about. There's plenty of information on all kinds of poultry.

Are yours straight run or did you have them sexed? I picked my first four ducklings from a breeder with no thought to gender and got three males. Yikes!! I did not have problems with the boys fighting with each other -- likely because they grew up together -- but it did mean too many boyfriends for my lone girl.

Efforts to balance out the sexes has been only somewhat successful. It's that time of year when boy ducks want to breed all the time, and girl ducks lose feathers on the backs of their heads.

Okay, that sounds a bit negative, but truly, I LOVE my ducks and I'm sure you will love yours too. I would be too afraid to try to get mine into the river and back out, but we have an old canoe ours use as a swimming pool in the summer!

Welcome to BYC!
