The Shepard (his name is Jack London) is about 3 or 4 years old. We rescued him from a shelter - it seems lots of people passed him up because he appears fearful/anxious at first. But it turns out (my wife is a veterinarian) he was going blind from a degenerative condition. Also, he may have been abused (he’s more nervous around men at first). He’s a total sweetheart, though, and he really proved himself when our daughter came along (18 months ago). He has been a total nanny to her. When she has a poopy diaper, he gently nudges her butt - we assume he’s trying to communicate to her as if she’s his puppy, or maybe he wants mom and dad to get a clue and change that stinkiness!

Nice looking family, ask these folks for advice on how to predator proof your coop. That way your feathered friends can stick around a little longer, otherwise it looks as though you have everything else figured out. Good luck and we hope to see more adventurous sorts like you living the way the rest of us can only dream about...
