We bought a property 19 months ago in the Clare Valley in South Australia which has 4 accommodation cabins as well as some interesting animals onsite. We have 2 chickens (we did have 4 but 2 have since died through age), 3 emus, 2 alpacas, 3 fallow deer, 2 cats and a border collie dog. The emus have been raised on the property since they were 15 weeks old and are now 5 years old.

I am hoping to find out some more information about our emus - we were told they were all females but in the last few weeks, one has laid a clutch of eggs, which is nicely covered with leaves and sticks. So we are a little confused as to what has happened :)

Emu males sit on the eggs and hatch them (if they were fertile). I'm not positive but think emu females are like chicken hens - they can lay eggs even without having a male around. But they won't hatch. Please do go to the forums at top of this page and scroll down to find EMU FORUM. Good luck.
